Dear Readers, 5/5

This year's Nobel Laureate for Peace may seem a surprise to many, and definitely there have been and will be many who question just what US President Barack Obama has done in the nine months since he took office to deserve such an honour.

A wise man once said that, every philosopher has tried to interpret the world in many different ways. The point though is to change it. And that is what Barack Obama is striving to do. His Peace Prize is not to honour the past but to celebrate the future, and he is someone who is saying that things can be changed.

Perhaps some might scoff at his desire to ensure that everyone is given a chance, to introduce to the world a new sense of multilateralism rather than the unilateralism of superpower or big power politics. But people need hope - hope for a better future and the renewed feeling of optimism that comes with it. Obama has started the ball rolling, and it is imperative that other governments follow suit.

However, it is not just government leaders who need to lead but corporate ones as well. Barack Obama won the Presidency of the United States and the Peace Prize on the back of daring to promise change, and in this new economic climate, companies that claim leadership in their respective industries should show true leadership in pushing for and implementing change. Real substantial change that work for the betterment of the company, the stakeholders, and the industry as a whole and not just those that serve to increase the amount of bonuses the executives pocket.

It is said that during the darkest times, true leadership shines through. And although the worst might be over as far as the economy is concerned, the world is still not yet out of the woods. Therefore, it is those people who are leading the way - people like Barack Obama and those visionary captains of industry, who we at International Business Review salute.
