Cisco makes bid for Starent - ICT
The world's leading provider and manufacturer of network solutions, Cisco, has bought over Starent Networks Corp for a premium price of US$2.9b. The sale will thus allow Cisco to tap into the wealth of expertise that Starent has in the field of mobile network infrastructure and also boosted its position in the 4G mobile race. The sale, which valued Starent at US$35 per share - a 21% increase on its closing price on the 12th of October, is the second acquisition Cisco has made in a month. Just two weeks before the Starent take-over, Cisco also completed a US$3b deal to acquire Tanberg a maker of videoconferencing equipment.
According to observers, the decision to take over Starent looks like a signal by Cisco that it is shifting its next generation mobile networks focus from WiMAX to LTE (Long Term Evolution). Some have also said that the deal looks to be a pre-emptive strike that prevents rival Juniper from entering into a partnership with Starent, and thus forming an anti-Cisco trio with Nokia. Cisco's moves have also boosted belief that other network players will soon go into an M&A spree as they seek to consolidate their position in the face of Cisco's strengthened one.
China's LED industry shines forth
Even with the cloud of economic uncertainty looming, China's light-emitting diode (LED) industry is proving to be a fledgling but rapidly growing sector. With the might of the Chinese government behind it, the LED industry is seen to have the potential to outpace its rivals in the United States and Japan.
Due to the declining prices of raw materials used in the production of LED products, prices of finished LED products have plunged, increasing their affordability. According to Li Mantie, general manager of Shenzhen Ledman Optoelectronic Co, a leader in LED production in China, more affordable LED products in the market could accelerate their use thus boosting the industry. However according to Xi Guanyi, an industry consultant at the Information and Technology Research Centre at CCID Consulting Co, the lack of advanced wafer and chip technology may pose a major hindrance to the industry.
Google OS to take on Microsoft
USA: In a move seen to intensify the browser wars, Google has announced that it is developing a new operating system for inexpensive computers to topple Microsoft's long dominance over the global personal computing market. According to the announcement on Google's website, the new operating system will be based on the company's own web browser, Chrome.
The operating system is designed primarily for "netbooks", a lower cost, less powerful type of notebook computers that are increasingly being sought after by budget-conscious buyers primarily interested in Web-surfing. A fierce rivalry between the two technology giants has been around for many years and is set to increase
with Google's hold over the search engine market having given it the means to directly challenge Microsoft. Microsoft itself has invested billions of dollars to improve its own Internet search engine and advertising systems but has gained little in its attempt to thwart Google.
